Bingo’s history, like most gambling games, is largely inspired by the Europeans.  Unlike other gambling games, however, it was conceptualized in the United States.  What sets apart Bingo from all the other gambling games and casino games, however, is the tolerance it has received from the public ever since it has been created.

The European Roots of Bingo

In Italy, a certain lottery game had been occupying the Italians every Saturday.  This lottery game is simple.  Cards are dealt to each player, with each card having columns, nine vertical and three horizontal.  This game is called the Lo Guico del Lotto D’Italia, where the principal aim in order to win the game is to follow a particular pattern.  In other parts of Europe, a game of a similar method was also introduced.

From Beano to Bingo

How did Bingo arise in United States?  The Italian lottery game was eventually imitated by a carnival caller.  This carnival caller would hold a game similar to the rules of the French lottery in every carnival event.  One of the carnival events was incidentally attended by Edwin Lowe.  At this time, Edwin Lowe is suffering from the loss and failure of a company he established in the then recent past.

Edwin Lowe happened to pass by the carnival caller as he was holding a game of the lottery.  In this game, the caller would draw disks containing numbers.  If a particular card of a participating player happens to have the same number announced by the caller, he is supposed to place a bean corresponding the number.  Once a pattern—horizontal, vertical, or diagonal—is fulfilled, the player must shout, Beano!

Lowe saw how profitable and well-attended this particular game was, so upon arriving back at his hometown in New York, he devised a game similar to what he saw in the carnival.  Eventually, this new game was called Bingo.

Bingo and the Masses

Unlike other gambling games, Bingo does not suffer the same public rebuke.  In fact, the game was used by institutions like the Church to gain funds.  One outstanding example is when a priest in Pennsylvania used bingo in order to raise funds for the church.  The game then only had random numbers, which brought about many simultaneous winners in just one round.  To solve this problem, Carl Leffer, a professor at Columbia University, was approached and asked for help.  His help enabled the multitude of unique bingo cards we now have in the market.
